Three West Crete beaches worth the drive

Balos, Falasarna and Elafonisi: how far they are from Chania and what to bring.

Three West Crete beaches worth the drive

West Crete has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, and most of them need a car.

Balos

About 1 hour 15 minutes from Chania. The last kilometres are a dirt road: drive slowly and go early, before the boats arrive.

Falasarna

A long sandy beach with clear water and, many say, the best sunset on Crete. About an hour from Chania.

Elafonisi

Pink sand and shallow water make it ideal for families. The drive, about 1.5 hours, runs through mountain villages: stop for lunch on the way.

Bring water, a hat and sunscreen. Want tips for your plans? Ask us when you pick up the car.
